Welcome to Memorial Christian Church,
an open and affirming
Disciples of Christ
congregation.
Founded as a mission to University of Michigan students in 1891 by the Christian Woman's Board of Missions, using funds donated by Mrs. Sarah Hawley Scott, the church was officially called the Church of Christ. The name Memorial Christian Church, honoring her memory and others, was not officially adopted until after the church's centennial.
Originally built on State Street, on the site of what is now the University of Michigan law quad, the church was moved in 1923 to its present site, across Tappan Avenue from the University's School of Business, at the corner of Hill Street.
The church incorporated in 1913 by filing Articles of Association with the Michigan Secretary of State.
The purpose of the corporation, amended in 1976, is fourfold:
Open and Affirming Statement:
MEMORIAL CHRISTIAN CHURCH IS, BY GOD'S GRACE,
AN OPEN AND AFFIRMING CONGREGATION.
ALL PEOPLE ARE WELCOME.
We, the people of Memorial Christian Church, affirm Christ's call to love God with all that we are and to love our neighbor as ourselves. We believe that God enriches the world with variety and calls upon us to engage in God's holy work.
Aware of the worth and importance of our diversities, we declare ourselves to be a church that is open to and appreciative of all people - whatever their race, gender, varying abilities, age, origin, sexual orientation, family configuration, economic, or educational status, or other distinction.
We believe that all people are children of God and entitled to participate fully
in all the activities of this church and of society.
Vision Statement:
To be a community empowered by the Holy Spirit to witness with word and deed to
the Grace of God as revealed through Christ to the university community
at our doorstep and to the farthest reaches of the earth.
Mission Statement:
Memorial Christian Church is called to celebrate and share God's presence and grace
as revealed through the life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
We are called to understand the needs of our congregation, community and the world...and to respond with a loving and nurturing ministry of witness and service to all people.
