Welcome.  High School students are experiencing tons of challenges, decisions, opportunities and questions.  It’s a fun time, a crazy time, a

time that’s extremely important for the Word of God to become foundational in their lives.  We want high school students to be exposed to

God’s word as much as possible.  We strive to equip them for a full, free and confident life in Christ.  We want to partner with parents and

students to provide a Christian education that empower students to be transformed in Christ as they:

explore meaning and mystery in the Bible

celebrate in worship, the sacraments, scripture and service

engage in ministries of love, justice, peace and witness

live in inclusive communities of faith, shaped and led by the Holy Spirit

We also believe that having fun together helps build a community that enjoys and serves each other.  Fun, community and service are part

of what we do at Memorial Christian Church.  We were made to worship God and enjoy each other.  It’s why we were created – not just to

seek God with all our hearts, but to find God.  And when we find God … God changes everything.

2008-09 Program:  The year-long program, Here Comes Trouble, for high school students will focus on examining Jesus’ life, teachings and

call to service.  Who is Jesus?  What makes Jesus so radical?  What does the nature of God reveal about Jesus’ relationship with us?  What’s

a Christian?  What does it mean to follow Jesus with one’s entire being – through our prayers, our presences, our gifts, and our service?

Sept. 14, 21 & 28, 2008:  What’s in the Bible and Why Should I Care?  This study series offers biblical insights that will help with major

questions about the nature of God and how Jesus relates to us.  Sessions are designed to meet the needs of students who have very little

or no experience with the Bible.

Oct. 5, 12, 19 & 26, 2008:  Why Jesus’ Way is the Way.  A way of sacrifice, failure, and holiness – all of these ways prepared the way of

the Lord that became incarnate in Jesus Christ.  Students will participate in a study of how the ways of those who came before Christ –

Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, Isaiah of Jerusalem and Isaiah of the Exile – revealed and prepared “the way” that became complete in

Jesus.

Nov. 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30, 2008:  The Disciple Experiment.  For 30 days, students are going to ask themselves:  What’s important to Jesus?

What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?  In every circumstance of life?

Dec. 6, 7, 14 & 21:  Church School Musical:  It’s A Wonder-Full Life.  Having to clean up after the Christmas play, Troy and Gabriella

wish they could forego the manger and all the Christmas stuff to go home and open presents.  As a surprise to everyone, Sharpay the

Angel, grants them their wish.  What would life be like with an empty manger, no lights on the tree and no bells ringing?  Troy and

Gabriella begin to understand the real reason for the season.

Jan. 7, 11, 18 & 25, 2009:  Emerge.  This exciting new interactive program helps to set the stage for youth to embrace discipleship.

The session will encourage students to find a time and place in which they can “get real” with God.  When students consistently hang

out with God, His heart will become their heart and they will receive God’s wisdom.

Feb. 1, 8, 15 & 22, 2009:  A Follower’s Life.  The emphasis will be on identifying with people that give their whole life (prayers,

presence, gifts, and service) on behalf others.  Students will write their own prayers; discover their own spiritual gifts; learn what it

means to be present to God and to others through their own faith stories; and get a vivid picture of how youth can make a difference

in their communities and world.

March 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29, 2009:  What’s So Amazing About Grace.  In Jesus’ parable of the mustard seed (Matthew 13:31-32) the shrub

is given over entirely to birds who are only in it for the shelter and shade.  Unmeriting, undeserving and uncredentialed, the birds are just

there to receive.  In this parable, the kingdom of heaven is such a reality:  a mustard shrub enjoyed by those who can never earn it, never

pay for it, never create it themselves – who can only delight in it.  That’s what’s so amazing about God’s grace.

April 5, 12, 19 & 26, 2009:  He Chose the Nails.  The cross is the main event of history.  In the drama we call Christ, the cross is the main

set.  Over the course of several weeks, students will dwell on the hill of Calvary, consider what that means for their lives and wrestle with

the realization that Jesus chose the cross for every one of us.

May 3, 10, 17 & 24, 2009:  Becoming His Hands and Feet in the World.  There are places of leverage in each life, places where growth is

happening so quickly that a small move can change the projection of a lifetime.  One of the most critical moments in our life comes during

the teen years.  It is a time of incredible change and fast moving freedom.  Another moment happens when teenagers are making their

transition to adult life.  It is a time of struggles with issues of values, connection to Christ and others in the world.  We can create a

powerful opportunity to enlist young people in the work of God’s world.  This month, students will spend time preparing for service on a

mission trip.

June 6, 7  & 14, 2009:  Be Changed.  Teenagers will have the experience of planning and leading a worship service which will focus on

serving Christ by serving others  -- a reflection on being attentive to God and how faith can impact their lives.  It’s also time when children

and youth share with the congregation what they have learned during the year.  Teachers and volunteers will host a luncheon after the

service.

June 26-30, 2009:  Make Change.  High School students and volunteers will have a chance to live out Jesus’ teaching about identifying

with people in need by going on a 3-5 day mission trip.  Students will move out of the classroom and into the world to act on what they

have learned.  Teenagers will be accompanied by a group of adult volunteers.  Scholarships will be available for those interested in making

the trip but who may not have the necessary funds to pay for all of their expenses.  Specific dates and location for the mission trip will be

determined later.
